Madewell is making history by becoming the first US denim brand to join hands with bluesign®, a global leader in sustainability solutions for the textile industry. This landmark partnership is not only reshaping the way denim is produced but also highlighting Madewell’s unwavering commitment to a more sustainable and responsible future.

Sustainability at the Core of Denim

Denim, with its timeless appeal and versatility, has long been a staple in wardrobes around the world. However, the conventional methods of denim production have come under increasing criticism for their negative impact on the environment and workers’ well-being. Madewell’s partnership with bluesign® is a bold step towards mitigating these concerns and redefining the standards of denim manufacturing.

Embracing the bluesign® Vision

bluesign®’s reputation as a trailblazer in sustainable textile production is well-established. Founded in 2000, the bluesign® SYSTEM focuses on eliminating harmful substances from the very beginning of the manufacturing process.

It sets stringent standards for environmentally friendly and safe production, ensuring that the final textile product adheres to global consumer safety requirements. bluesign®’s approach resonates with Madewell’s own commitment to sustainability and ethical production.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability

At the heart of this partnership is bluesign®’s holistic approach, which encompasses sustainable chemistry, enhanced worker safety, and increased resource efficiency. By conducting thorough on-site assessments and verifying chemical inventories, bluesign® collaborates closely with its system partners, including brands, manufacturers, and chemical suppliers.

Together, they craft tailor-made solutions that prioritize safety for people, the environment, and end consumers.

Madewell’s Sustainable Denim Journey

The journey towards sustainable denim production for Madewell commenced with the partnership in October 2022. Their inaugural denim style under the bluesign® collaboration was meticulously crafted using bluesign® Approved ISKO fabrics. This certification signifies a commitment to adhering to strict worker safety and environmental requirements, as well as eliminating hazardous chemicals right from the fabric’s inception.

bluesign® Denim: A Transformative Initiative

The partnership coincides with bluesign®’s unveiling of the “bluesign® DENIM” concept, which underlines the pivotal role of clean chemistry and responsible production processes in sustainable choices. This initiative is a commitment to minimizing the detrimental impact of denim production by collaborating with partners to eliminate harmful chemicals and implement sustainable practices.
