Sustainable fashion and beauty is all the rage, but home decor? This is harder to come by.
In response to the demand, ettitude has released a “Down Alternative” range of bedding that includes the Down Alternative Pillow and Down Alternative Comforter, both of which are made out of a bamboo blend.
Bamboo is widely known as “the vegan silk” for its luxuriously soft qualities, so it’s no surprise that ettitude chose the fabric to be a key component of their debut vegan bedding collection.
Down bedding is typically filled with feathers plucked from the bellies of birds, many of which are alive and conscious during the plucking. Animal rights activists have been arguing for years that this practice is inhumane and cruel towards animals. However, despite their efforts, the practice has continued owing to the perceived superiority both in the comfort and warmth of down duvets and pillows. But now, ettitude has come up with a line of cruelty-free and vegan bedding to rival even the softest of traditional down bedding.
The new collection is made from a blend of 60% recycled PET and 40% CleanBamboo, ettitude’s patented innovative fabric. The recycled PET used in the line was sourced from existing, Global Standard Recycled 4.0 certified post-consumer plastic waste that was collected from recycling facilities around the world. From there, it was spun into new fibres. That is why ettitude can say that buying one of their Down Alternative standard pillows saves 29.6 plastic water bottles from ending up in a landfill.
Meanwhile, the CleanBamboo material is used in both the filling and lining, and is a vegan bamboo lyocell fabric that is made from 100% organic bamboo. The Melbourne-based brand’s signature fabric is at once cooling, breathable, silky-soft, sustainable, hypoallergenic, and fully biodegradable.
Further, ettiude produces their CleanBamboo fabric using a low-impact, closed-loop system whereby no harsh chemicals are used and water usage is minimized (in fact, 98 percent of the water they use in the production process is recycled). All of the bamboo is sourced from Forest Stewardship Council-certified forests, ensuring they are sustainably managed, and the fabric itself is OEKO-Tex Standard 100 certified, ensuring it does not contain any harmful chemicals, additives, or allergens.
