There’s no denying that the world is still in the midst of a global COVID-19 pandemic. However, with increased rates of vaccination, many of us might feel a bit more at ease with being outside of the four walls of our homes. Especially after last summer, making the most out of nice weather is a must for countless families.

If money or travel is an issue, while also keeping in mind others’ and your own safety, there are tons of kid-friendly activities that can be enjoyed from the comfort of our own yards!

Here are some ideas of fun outdoor activities you can do with your family and friends with little to no equipment!

Play Flashlight Hide-N-Seek

Take your indoors hide and seek games outside, and to raise the stakes, play in the dark with a flashlight as your only light source! It can get particularly eerie on summer nights when you can’t hear anything other than crickets… And your seeker’s footsteps.

Make sure you wear insect repellent in case you’re really well hidden and mosquitoes find you before your family does!

Fly a Kite

If you don’t have one or don’t want to buy one, and want to stay sustainable, make one! All you need is two recycled plastic bags, glue, marker, ribbon, a ruler, scissors, sticks, string, and tape.

Check out Budget Dumpster for a more comprehensive step-by-step guide on how to build one from a recycled plastic bag. Crafting a kite could be a fun group activity in and of itself!

Young children, teenagers, and parents alike can enjoy this peaceful activity.

DIY an Outdoor Obstacle Course

Depending on what you have lying around in your home, garage and garden, design an obstacle course of things your family members can climb, throw, crawl, slide or jump over!

Check out Imagination Soup for ideas of things you can use or do in your obstacle course.

Have a Picnic

Instead of eating inside, bring your lunch to the great outdoors! Be sure to make cute little sandwiches, pasta salad, and cut up some fruits and vegetables for the occasion. Additionally, bring some cookies, pastries, popsicles or fudgesicles that will definitely be enjoyable on a hot day.

Remember to get some refreshing beverages and some blankets or towels! Also, consider using a cooler for cold food or drinks if you’re having a picnic a little further away from home.
