Recently, Japanese artist Kei Imazu’s solo exhibition entitled Mapping the Land/Body/Stories of its Past was held at ANOMALY gallery in Tokyo. One of the most noteworthy pieces presented as part of the exhibition is a time-based painting of a rainforest being destroyed.

Based on data indicating that the rainforests of Sumatra, Kalimantan and Papua in Indonesia are being cut down in favour of oil palm plantations, the Artificial green by nature green installation aims to present the negative environmental impacts caused by humans.

“In this time-based work, the action of a brush dripped with water is manipulated by the organic currents of an oil palm tree. It caresses the greenery and erases it,” explains Imazu.

Created in collaboration with Indonesian artist Bagus Pandega, the Artificial green by nature green installation was first showcased in 2019 at the ArtJog MMXIX: Art in Common exhibition in Yogyakarta.
