An Australian company called Karst offers a line of luxury notebooks, planners and sketchpads that are made from recycled stone — specifically calcium carbonate.
Featuring durable, tearproof and waterproof properties, Karst Stone Paper also has a brighter and smoother surface when compared to traditional wood-based paper.
Calcium carbonate is a natural byproduct that occurs during mining of limestone. Karst salvages the waste material from quarries and construction sites and turns it into a pulp by combining a non-toxic resin as a binding agent. With 60 percent less energy used than traditional paper-making methods, neither the recipe nor the fabrication process requires any water, bleach or acids.
Karst is partnered with a non-profit organization called One Tree Planted that works to restore forests around the globe. For every notebook sold, one native tree is planted.
