Hollywood royalty and billionaire Kylie Jenner has just launched her brand new fashion label called Khy. Said to “redefine the modern wardrobe by offering edited collections that seamlessly blends luxury with everyday style,” Khy is currently the talk of the town and has social media abuzz.
The Khy label’s debut collection entitled DROP 001, designed in collaboration with Berlin-based contemporary fashion label NAMILIA, has received tons of compliments from fans for its forward-thinking style.
However, some have called out Kylie for the use of faux leather in her garments. Although not using real animal leather is commendable and worthy of praise from vegan supporters, the garments are made using PU LEATHER, which is derived from plastic.
Unlike real leather which is derived from animals, PU LEATHER is completely artificial. Typically, it involves applying a thermoplastic polymer to a cotton or polyester base and then subjecting it to surface treatments to imitate genuine leather.
PU leather has several disadvantages compared to real leather. It is less breathable, less durable, lacks a natural look and feel, may not be as eco-friendly, lacks the same luxury and value, has limited repair and customization options, may not be as timeless, and could pose potential health concerns due to the presence of harmful chemicals like phthalates.
Many of Kylie’s fans have complained about the use of faux leather, saying that the garments should have been made of real leather given its expensive price point.
Aside from faux leather, Khy’s website does not include a sustainability page, does not disclose its sourcing and manufacturing, and lacks transparency in several key aspects. So the answer to the question “is Kylie Jenner’s new brand Khy sustainable?” is a resounding no.
