Founded by Monique Chan and Eva Perchanok, Bruized is a Canadian startup that repurposes imperfect produce into 100% plant-based food.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, roughly one-third of food produced globally for human consumption is wasted or lost every year.
In developing countries, 40% of food losses occur during post-harvest and processing due to financial, managerial and technical constraints such as a lack of inadequate storage and cooling facilities. In developed countries, 40% of food losses occur at retail and consumer levels. This is attributed to factors such as an over-emphasis on appearance and overstocking.
With the mission to “combat food waste through education and yummy eats”, Bruized sources from various distributors and upcycles the imperfect produce into healthy vegan snacks and drinks. The food items are then made available for purchase at local events and markets.
“We want you to feel good about what you fuel your body with while helping divert food from the trash,” says Bruized. “We are a collective starting a revolution to change our food systems.”
