Facebook has announced an open beta for Spark AR Studio on Instagram that is set to become available this summer.
Introduced in 2017, Spark AR Studio is Facebook’s AR (Augmented Reality) software suite. With Spark AR Studio on Instagram previously only available in a closed beta for select individuals, brands and public figures such as Rihanna, Kylie Jenner, Ariana Grande, Vogue and Gucci, the open beta will enable any creator and developer to create their own AR filters for Instagram Stories.
At F8 developer conference, Facebook has also announced Windows support for Spark AR Studio alongside new features that “bring more efficiency, interactivity and control to the AR creation process”.
The new features include updated Patch Editor with a new UI and foundation, in-product testing of effects, the ability to break a project down into small reusable chunks called Blocks, and more.
“Augmented reality lets us uncover new layers of context, meaning, and emotion in our everyday lives,” said Facebook. “Over the past year, more than 1 billion people have used AR experiences powered by Facebook’s Spark AR platform, with hundreds of millions using AR each month across Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. They’re expanding the language of expression, transforming the way we shop, and adding meaning to real-world objects in fun and interesting ways.”
