At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, Infiniti has unveiled the brand’s first all-electric vehicle concept in the form of a midsize SUV called INFINITI QX Inspiration.
The electric SUV concept is said to be part of INFINITI’s design study that previews the launch of “a range of high-performance electrified vehicles which promise an engaging drive and deliver range confidence”.
“QX Inspiration marks the beginning of a new generation of INFINITI cars and establishes a direct blueprint for the brand’s first electric vehicle,” said Christian Meunier, President and Chairman, INFINITI. “Based on a new, dedicated electric vehicle architecture and inspired by INFINITI’s Japanese DNA, the SUV concept previews a product portfolio which will offer high performance, ultra-low emissions, and range confidence.”
Utilizing the electric all-wheel drive (e-AWD) system, a high-capacity battery pack located below the vehicle floor will feed power to the electric motors on each axle. INFINITI has announced plans to implement the e-AWD system for all of their fully electric vehicles produced in the near future.
“Global demand for SUVs continues to grow, as does the number of drivers eager to make the shift to an electrified powertrain,” said Meunier “QX Inspiration meets at the intersection of these trends and sets a direct precedent for the launch of a powerful all-electric SUV. INFINITI is a brand built on the idea of technological innovation, and the electrification of our product line-up is a natural next step for us. The QX Inspiration concept signals the direction we plan to take.”
With the design of the QX Inspriation influenced by the Japanese spatial concept of Ma, the interiors are “hand-crafted using traditional techniques and a choice of materials inspired by a subtle Japanese sensuality”.
“We were inspired by the Japanese concept of Ma, a focus on the lines and the empty space in between,” said Karim Habib, Executive Design Director, INFINITI. “What is happening in that space between the lines – the free, natural flow of surfaces – is truly expressive. It’s the empty space between the edges that often carries the loudest message.”
