Global fashion retailer H&M is furthering its commitment to the environment with the release of its most sustainable denim collection to date.

Called The Recycled Denim Collection, H&M’s new ten-piece line features all kinds of ‘90s-inspired denim styles that are made out of recycled materials.

To be specific, the items in H&M’s new Recycled Denim Collection feature 100% recycled fabrics, threads, labels, pocketing, metal zippers, and trims.

The recycled fabric they sourced included pre-consumer recycled cotton from industrial waste cuttings, post-consumer recycled cotton from collected garments, and recycled polyester. In fact, some of the pieces in the collection (namely the accessories) were made entirely from fabric that was cut and re-used from production rejections.

In addition, to bring this eco-friendly collection to life, H&M employed a special washing technique known to have a lower environmental impact. The technique in question was also free from harmful chemicals that typically permeate this part of the manufacturing process.

In the official press release for the collection, H&M notes that a new pair of denim jeans requires thousands of litres of water to create. They sought to create an alternative to this wasteful process by producing a collection that didn’t require creating new materials. That’s where the idea for the Recycled Denim Collection was born.

By reusing leftover fabrics, H&M managed to produce a collection that’s kinder to the planet without compromising on style or affordability.

H&M’s Recycled Denim Collection currently features women’s styles only, including baggy jeans, denim jackets, shirt jackets, straight jeans, and two accessories: a denim shopper bag and bucket hat. Pieces are available in black and medium and dark blue washes. Inspired by ‘90s fashion, the silhouettes are loose and many feature a patchwork design.

The Recycled Denim Collection is just the latest in what we hope is a long line of moves made by H&M towards implementing more sustainable and circular business practices.
