Founded in 2015 by Zahir Dossa, Josh Maciejewski, and Hien Nguyen, Function of Beauty is a hair and body care brand with a difference: they offer fully customizable products. Recognizing the importance of individuality when it comes to beauty, their service involves completing a multi-question online survey that takes information about consumer needs and preferences.
Through the completion of an online questionnaire on their website, every individual is able to create a product that matches their unique requirements. Consumers are also able to decide the name of their formula, which gives the product an additional personal touch.
The finished composition is then delivered directly for ease of collection. Recently, they celebrated the creation of two million unique formulas, with the potential to make 54 trillion.
Function of Beauty pledges that every product formulated through the website is free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, gluten. Often found in conventional shampoos and conditioners, the aforementioned ingredients can be damaging to certain types of hair. On request, formulas can also be made silicone-free, dye-free, and fragrance-free. Moreover, Function of Beauty places an emphasis on vegan and cruelty-free production and ensures that their formulas fulfill these criteria.
Currently, Function of Beauty offers several different options for experiencing their product. Consumers are able to choose between a stand-alone purchase, biannually, quarterly or monthly. The bottles of shampoo and conditioner are available to order in either 8oz or 16oz.
While the brand was initially established for hair, they have more recently released a customizable skincare range. This includes two types of cleaners, several types of moisturizer, and serum. They claim 7/10 testers agreed that their customized moisturizer left their skin feeling soft and smooth.
With a commitment to sustainability, Function of Beauty’s shipping boxes are made from 100% recyclable kraft composed of 30% post-consumer recycled materials. In addition, their bottles and jars are all 100% recyclable.
