MOD Santorini

A fully vegan boutique hotel has opened on the Greek island of Santorini.

The hotel in question, MOD Santorini, is family-run and was originally built in the 1970s. However, it had been shut down for over a decade until the owners passed it onto their son, Anargyros (Argiris) Fousteris, who along with his partner, Christina Boutrou (who is herself vegan), transformed it into an eco-friendly oasis.

Fousteris and Boutrou saw a gap in the market, recognizing that small islands, such as Santorini, had very limited options available to vegan tourists. As such, they decided to reinvent the MOD Santorini as the island’s first all-vegan boutique hotel.

The newly-renovated boutique hotel is 100% vegan and for adults only. It overlooks the Aegean Sea and currently consists of four suites on one level (though when fully completed, it will have twelve suites in total spread out over three levels).

Fousteris and Boutrou incorporated a variety of sustainable elements into the MOD Santorini, ranging from the bedding to the toiletries. For example, the mattresses were made from natural coconut fibres and the sheets and towels were made locally in Greece out of 100% cotton.

Beyond the rooms, MOD Santorini has a fully vegan kitchen, which offers complimentary breakfast every day. Menu items range from chickpea flour omelettes to bread with jam, seasonal fruit, and freshly squeezed orange juice. Specialty dishes can also be ordered for an additional fee, and these include hazelnut chocolate pancakes, waffles and berries, and traditional Greek spanakopita, all of which are vegan. Meanwhile, dinner options include the likes of falafel wraps, vegan burgers, and quinoa Buddha bowls.

The MOD Santorini offers a wide range of activities for guests, all of which are centred on wellness and romance. For example, guests can book a pirate picnic with sparkling wine for two, vegan food and wine tours, and guided yoga classes.

As a sustainable, smart hotel, MOD Santorini aims to minimize its environmental impact at every turn, whether that means offering an exclusively plant-based menu, adopting a plastic-free policy, using eco-friendly cleaning products, or reducing water usage wherever possible.

Opening just last month, the MOD Santorini currently has four suites available for booking. All rooms feature private balconies and spacious floor plans, while a select two also come with an outdoor, wraparound jacuzzi overlooking the sea.
