Said to be part of a new mobile category, Samsung has unveiled their latest smartphone called Galaxy Fold.

Featuring the world’s first Dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex Display, the Galaxy Fold is capable of being unfolded from a 4.6-inch screen smartphone to a 7.3-inch tablet.

“Today, Samsung is writing the next chapter in mobile innovation history by changing what’s possible in a smartphone,” said DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics. “Galaxy Fold introduces a completely new category that unlocks new capabilities never seen before with our Infinity Flex Display. We created Galaxy Fold for those that want to experience what a premium foldable device can do, beyond the limitations of a traditional smartphone.”

Utilizing an internal hinge with multiple interlocking gears alongside a new polymer layer that is roughly 50 percent thinner than conventional smartphone displays, the Galaxy Fold is able to be opened and closed “like a book”.

Designed to enable users to open three active apps at once on the main display, Samsung’s App Continuity will seamlessly transition the apps between folded and open displays.

Fitted with a dual battery system, the Galaxy Fold while being charged by wire is capable of simultaneously charging a second device such as the Galaxy Buds via Wireless PowerShare.

The Galaxy Fold also has six camera lenses in total, with three in the back, two on the inside and one on the cover.

Available in a colour finishing of Space Silver, Cosmos Black, Martian Green and Astro Blue, Galaxy Fold will hit the U.S markets on April 26 at a cost of $1,980.

“Galaxy Fold is more than a mobile device,” said Samsung. “It’s a portal to an entire galaxy of connected devices and services.”
