Amsterdam-based footwear label Filling Pieces, established in 2009, is the latest company moving towards more sustainable means. In doing so, the Guillaume Philibert-helmed label has recently released its most responsible sneaker model to date: the Low Plain Court 683.

Placing a larger focus on sustainable materials and responsible methods of sourcing, the Low Plain Court 683 marks Filling Pieces’ first silhouette created with the company’s new manufacturing techniques to cut down the use of harmful chemicals and increasingly scarce resources. The model is based around the brand’s Low Plain Court silhouette and has been constructed using fully-traceable Dutch organic leather hides, coloured using metal-free tanning, that was sourced using the Trace Your Leather Cooperative.

To eliminate the use of petroleum from the process, the sneaker’s sole is made from a bio-based sugarcane EVA compound. Other features on the Low Plain Court 683 include a recycled PET mesh lining, a recycled nylon logo label, laces made from organic cotton with a beeswax coat, recycled cork insoles, and a blue woven Responsibility label and embossed branding. The sneaker also comes with a cattle-style tag bearing a QR code, which takes customers to a webpage dedicated to the responsible steps in crafting the shoe.

In terms of the sneaker’s name, 683 is an homage to the additional manufacturing cost of €6,83 EUR (approximately $10.50 CAD) it took Filling Pieces to create the silhouette with traceable materials, sourced for quality, longevity and reduced environmental impact in mind.

The sneaker is the first in the new 683 line of conscious products, and represents Filling Pieces’ commitment to being more environmentally responsible at all levels of the company. This initiative will be implemented throughout the label’s future footwear collections.

The Low Plain Court 683 is available now from Filling Pieces’ web store, in black, beige, grey, and white. The sneaker retails for €207 EUR (approximately $316 CAD).

To keep up with its sustainable mission, all of Filling Pieces’ footwear and shipment packaging is made from recycled cardboard, whilst the elimination of single-use plastics by the end of 2020 is still in the works.
