Canadian-owned Elate Cosmetics has made a name for itself in the beauty industry owing to its sustainable products.

While ethical, cruelty-free, vegan, and low-waste makeup has always been their mission, they recently took this a step further by extending sustainability beyond cosmetics to the packaging of such items.

With the release of the Perfectly Imperfect line, Elate Cosmetics has sought to eliminate waste not only by creating packaging made out of sustainably sourced bamboo but by joining the refillable beauty movement.

“With sustainability at the forefront of everything we do, we are eliminating waste by embracing minor flaws and giving these perfectly imperfect bamboo palettes a little love,” reads the website’s description of the collection.

Every item in the Perfectly Imperfect collection, which includes compacts, palettes, and beauty bags of varying sizes, is made to be refilled rather than thrown out after use.

Elate Cosmetics’ Perfectly Imperfect collection features a refillable brow/eye colour compact, blush compact, foundation compact, medium palette, PRO palette, and even a mascara container.

Further, nearly all of the different eye, face, and lip beauty products the cosmetic company offers give consumers the choice of purchasing them in their own individual packaging or in a refill/recharge packet that can then be placed directly in one of the Perfectly Imperfect palettes or compacts.

Take Elate Cosmetics’ Creme Revealer CN2 concealer as an example. The Creme Revealer product description reads, “As a refillable makeup, Creme Revealer refills will arrive to you in a reusable/recyclable aluminum pan and packaged in plantable seed paper. Place your Creme Revealer in the reusable, water-treated Bamboo Compact or one of our refillable makeup Bamboo Palettes.” Making this decision is as easy as selecting the “Revealer CN2 Refill” option from the drop-down menu on the product’s page. It also reduces the price of the product by $8 (decreasing it from $26 to just $18), making the refill packet both a more environmentally-friendly and economical option for consumers.

In general, this is a fantastic way of encouraging consumers to reduce their waste. However, the use of bamboo is also a particularly smart choice. That is because bamboo is biodegradable, which means that if you ever do want to throw out your refillable palette or compact, all you need to do is put it in your compost bin.

In addition, Elate Cosmetics works exclusively with bamboo that has been minorly damaged and otherwise would have been tossed out. According to their website, bamboo products in the Perfectly Imperfect line may have “minor cosmetic damage” such as scratches, dents, chips, engraving errors, or loose hinges.

Overall, Elate Cosmetics’ Perfectly Imperfect line speaks to the brand’s “5 Conscious Beauty Principles,” which are as follows: Impact, Ethics, Community, Future, and Mission. They wholeheartedly believe that individuals can have a global impact and that every single person has the capacity to make a difference if they just make small changes to their habits and mindset.
