Patent filings have revealed the design of Dyson’s “radically different” electric vehicle (EV).

“We’ve been researching motors, batteries, aerodynamics, vision systems and robotics for 22 years. Now the time is right to bring all our knowledge and experience together into one big project – an electric car,” said Dyson founder and CEO Sir James Dyson.

While the patents provide a glimpse, information regarding Dyson’s EV has been left sparse.

“The patents certainly don’t reveal what our vehicle will really look like or give any specifics around what it will do,” said Dyson. “Rather they show an androgynous vehicle and provide a glimpse of some of the inventive steps that we are considering.”

Development of the EV is lead at Dyson’s bespoke automotive development site located in Hullavington, UK. Formally an airbase and airfield, the Hullavington campus features Research, Design and Development (RDD) labs that are said to be some of the most advanced in the world.

Dyson has also been constructing a dedicated EV manufacturing division in Singapore that is set to be completed in 2020.

“Singapore has a comparatively high cost base, but also great technology expertise and focus,” said Dyson CEO Jim Rowan. “It is therefore the right place to make high quality technology loaded machines, and the right place to make our electric vehicle.”
