With the aim of cleaning up “the mess of home cleaning products”, an upstart brand called Truman’s has launched a delivery subscription service of cleaning agents that are packaged in recyclable cartridges.
“We didn’t understand why the cleaning aisle at our local store had more than 50 unique surface cleaners, colors and scents,” said Truman’s. “Or why kitchen cleaner couldn’t be used on certain countertops or stainless steel appliances. With labels that read like prescription drug ads, cleaning products needed to be simplified.”
“We started Truman’s because, while we’re somewhat obsessed with cleaning, we’re totally obsessed with reducing waste and clutter,” explained Truman’s. “Nowhere could we have a bigger impact than in the overcrowded world of home cleaning products, where so many specialized cleaners in plastic bottles clamor for our dollars with “fresh new scents” and trendy colors. Nobody needs a gazillion cleaning products with harsh chemicals cluttering their cabinets, and our planet certainly doesn’t need the plastic empties.”
There are 4 variations of cartridges that are available called The Glass Is Always Cleaner, Everything and the Kitchen Sink, More Shower to You and Floors Truly. Each of the cartridge variations are specifically made for certain surfaces and materials.
By simply filling a spray bottle with water and popping in the cartridge, the non-toxic cleaning agent will release and mix with the water once the sprayer is twisted onto the bottle.
Once the cleaning agent is spent, the cartridge can be recycled. By utilizing the patented refill cartridges and reusing the spray bottle, roughly 96 percent less plastic is used when compared to conventional cleaning products.
Shipping the cartridges directly to customers in 100% recyclable packaging, Truman’s states that this method avoids the store mark-ups that increase costs. With a starter kit including 4 spray bottles and each of the 4 cartridge variations at a cost of $12 USD, the delivery subscription service of 4 refill cartridges every 6 months is priced at $15 USD.
“Because Truman’s ships cleaners directly to customers, each bottle is a functional work of art. They don’t need cluttered labels or obscenely bright colors to stand out on store shelves,” explained Truman’s. “And the refill cartridges take up so little space that you’ll free up an entire closet shelf. Don’t believe us? An entire decade’s worth of refills fits in a single kitchen drawer.”
“We knew the home cleaning industry needed real change. It’s dominated by a few global companies that add new cleaners you don’t need just to pad profits,” said Truman’s co-founder Jon Bostock and Alex Reed. “Then they compete for shelf space at stores, which all get their share of the price. So we set about creating a company that will upend the industry with conveniently delivered, easy-to-use products that are so much better for the planet.”
