In collaboration with microbiologist Dr. Callewaert, biomaterial apparel designer Rosie Broadhead has encapsulated probiotic bacteria into the fibres of clothing.

Called Skin II, the project aims to “advance the performance of clothing” and reinterpret the bond between fabric and skin.

With millions of microorganism in the body, Broadhead states that cosmetic products and fabrics that contain toxic chemicals can disrupt optimal conditions and the biodiversity of bacteria living on the skin.

By strategically positioning probiotic bacteria where sweat is most produced, the garment is activated when in contact with moisture to reduce body odour, improve the skin’s immune system and boost cell renewal.

“Primarily, I wanted to create clothing that was healthy for our skin with minimal impact on the environment, which led me to consider the skin microbiome and its importance in maintaining healthy skin,” said Broadhead.
