According to the BBC, roughly 85% of all global fish stocks are either over-exploited, depleted, fully exploited or in recovery from exploitation. Overfishing is just one aspect of this dire issue. Pollution, destruction of habitat, and global warming all play a part in reducing the number of healthy fish in our oceans.

Based in Hong Kong, Avant is a startup offering an alternative in the form of lab-grown fish meat that is not only nutritional and delish but also cruelty-free, sustainable, and scalable.

To create lab-grown fish meat, Avant first extracts and isolates small samples of cells from a fish without actually killing it. Next, the cells are fed with nutrients and nurtured until it is ready to be cooked and served.

Unlike fish found in nature, Avant’s lab-grown fish is completely free from heavy metals and microplastics. Avant even claims that its lab-grown fish is more nutritious than conventionally produced fish.
