Created by interdisciplinary duo Vlatka Leskovar and Ivan Zidar of interdisciplinary design studio BOIR, SAL⊥ is a salt container that allows the creation and harvest of natural sea salt.

According to BOIR, several traditional saltworks in the Mediterranean have been discontinued due to competition from lower costs associated with industrial salt production.

“The traditional saltworks have been in perfect balance with nature, as the natural habitat of waterbirds. The disappearance of traditional saltworks threatens biodiversity, but it also threatens the rich culinary culture of the Mediterranean,” explained BOIR

The salt container mimics the sustainable creation process of sea salt that Mediterranean salt harvesters have been practicing for millennia.

To use SAL⊥, a thin layer of bottled Adriatic seawater (brine) is first poured into the container. The brine is then exposed to sunlight for an hour or heated in an oven. Once a crystal pattern appears, the salt is ready to be harvested with a metal T-shaped tool.

“Watch the unique patterns of white crystals appear against the dark background,” said BOIR. “Every time you pour in the sea water it leaves a different mark on the enamel, due to varied evaporation speed and different salt concentrations within the layer. Every time you get a different natural abstract artwork.”
