Australian brand Armadillo & Co has created a collection of luxurious and timeless rugs called Egyptian.
Consciously and responsibly handmade by artisans in India, the rugs are crafted from natural and recycled materials.
“Our new Egyptian weave is a beautiful collection of hand-crafted jute rugs, very beautifully over-dyed with a quality, earthy element to it,” said Armadillo & Co co-founder and creative director Jodie Fried.
“No machine can truly replace the care and precision of the handmade,” said Armadillo & Co. “In this busy modern age, objects that are crafted by the human hand not only soothe the senses, they act as visual reminders to be more mindful about what we bring into our homes. A hand-woven rug is ever-present, there to ground and nurture us, compelling us to connect with the people and spaces that surround us.”
The first step in creating a rug is hand dyeing and sun drying fibres. Using recipes of dye-masters, fibres in small batches are dyed using fire, a stirring rod and a saucepan. For large batches, a pole studded with hoops is used to hang skeins to dip in and out of a cauldron of dye.
Next, the fibres are spun and traditional hand-powered winders are used to guide wool onto spindles. Meanwhile, the jute is wound by hand around a wooden bobbin.
The fibres are then weaved using a loom, washed, and finished for an “almost flawless, yet rich” rug.
“Our rugs have soul and integrity, which both honour local culture and architectural history” explained Fried. “There’s that hand-crafted element to them forming the very backbone of the product.”
