Arc de Triomphe

For 16 days, the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France was wrapped in 25,000 square meters of recyclable polypropylene fabric with 3,000 meters of red rope tying it down.

The idea for the installation entitled Wrapped comes from late artist Christo Vladimirov Javacheff who together with his wife and fellow artist Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon, began creating public art back in 1961. Christo is said to have been fascinated by the Arc de Triomphe and had created a photomontage of the Arc de Triomphe wrapped in 1962. Decades later, the Centre des Monuments Nationaux realized Christo’s vision.

The Centre des Monuments Nationaux says that they are “pleased about the realization of a project that demonstrated its commitment to contemporary creation and that honored one of the most emblematic monuments in Paris and in France.”
