In the heart of New York City’s vibrant Nolita neighbourhood stands a store that is not just a place to shop but a testament to the art of preserving history while embracing contemporary design.

Self-care brand Aesop and their Nolita store, established in 2010, has evolved over the years into a symbol of the brand’s commitment to its surroundings, seamlessly blending the past with the present.

A Journey Through Time

Nolita, short for “North of Little Italy,” is a neighbourhood steeped in history and diversity. It’s a place where the old coexists harmoniously with the new, and where the past is as much a part of the fabric of daily life as the present. Aesop’s Nolita store pays homage to this unique character.

One cannot talk about this store without mentioning its remarkable history. The very first Aesop brick-and-mortar store in the United States, this establishment was crafted from salvaged copies of The New York Times. This initial act of resourcefulness set the tone for Aesop’s dedication to reusing existing materials and preserving the character of the neighbourhood.

A Reimagined Presence

Fast forward thirteen years and Aesop’s in-house design team decided to give their Nolita store a makeover. Instead of discarding the original brick walls and ceiling, they chose to celebrate their imperfections, seeing them as testaments to the building’s storied past. The result is a store that feels both familiar and transformed, echoing the spirit of Nolita itself.

The Art of Design

Aesop’s design philosophy is evident in every corner of the Nolita store. The central communal basin, for instance, draws inspiration from the marble countertops that once graced the windows of old pastry shops. It serves as the focal point where customers can explore Aesop’s wide range of formulations for the skin, hair, body, and home, all while receiving expert assistance from knowledgeable staff.

The store’s furniture pieces are a visual delight. With their spindly aluminum legs, they seem to float, creating an almost magical effect. These pieces are inspired by the iconic cedar-clad water towers that adorn Nolita’s rooftops. What’s truly remarkable is that the cedar planks used in the furniture are reclaimed from these very water towers, each with a history of approximately thirty years of water storage. By keeping the wood in its raw state, Aesop preserves the patina of decades of use, creating a bridge between the past and the present.

A Hidden Oasis

As you delve deeper into the store, you’ll discover a hidden gem—a secluded space concealed behind sliding wired-glass doors. Here, at the Fragrance Armoire, visitors can immerse themselves in Aesop’s world of unconventional Eaux de Parfum. It’s a place where you can personalize your clothing with your chosen fragrance, a unique experience that marries history with modernity. Two ensuite basins are available for personalized consultations, creating a space for deeper engagement with Aesop’s products.

A Nighttime Invitation

Even after the sun sets, Aesop’s Nolita store remains enchanting. A soft glow emanates from the depths of the secluded room, creating a nocturnal scenography that beckons to passers-by. It’s a reminder that the store is not just a place to shop but a living, breathing part of the neighbourhood.
