Stockholm’s Norrmalmstorg Square boasts a rich history that extends beyond its cobblestone streets and centuries-old architecture. It’s home to the Acne Studios flagship store, a contemporary fashion destination with a unique story deeply rooted in its historical surroundings.

A Historical Icon Reimagined

The site of the Acne Studios Norrmalmstorg store was once a bank, and in 1973, it gained worldwide notoriety for a hostage situation that unfolded within its walls. This event introduced the world to the term “Stockholm Syndrome,” a psychological phenomenon where hostages develop positive feelings for their captors.

Fast forward to the present day, and Acne Studios has taken on the task of redesigning this historic space, breathing new life into a building with a complex history. Jonny Johansson, Creative Director of Acne Studios, envisioned the store as a “temple” – a place that belongs to everyone, representing both the past and the future. The store’s new design takes inspiration from this vision.

An Ode to Marble

The store’s redesign is an essay in marble. The architects at Arquitectura-G conducted a deep dive into the origins of the historical building, leading them to strip away layers and reveal the striking marble structures that dominate the space. The walls are painted in the same hues as the marble, creating an immersive experience where the columns seemingly vanish into the space.

New marble columns frame the fitting rooms and the behind-the-scenes areas, further amplifying the store’s marble theme. Marble tables created by long-term collaborator Max Lamb and cantilevered marble shelves, which appear to float on the walls, add an artistic touch to the space.

Contemporary Elements

To balance the classical and the contemporary, Acne Studios introduced modern elements into the design. Bespoke stainless-steel rails provide a clear delineation of the space, much like a circle of rails that stands in the main hall. Benoit Lalloz designed a unique lighting system, adding a modern, abstract element that breaks the formality of the space, creating a harmonious fusion of old and new.

A Capsule Collection: “Stockholm Syndrome”

To commemorate the redesign of the Norrmalmstorg store and its historical significance, Acne Studios introduced a “Stockholm Syndrome” capsule collection. This collection serves as a bridge between the past and present, collaging together newspaper reports of the 1973 bank robbery and hostage-taking – a defining moment in Sweden’s history.
