Happy Earth Day 2020! First held in the United States on April 22, 1970, Earth Day is an annual event that raises awareness on environmental issues such as global warming with the hopes that people will reflect and change their lifestyles to be more sustainable.
Here are four practices and activities that you can do to reduce your carbon footprint and celebrate the 50th Earth Day.
Turn off the lights when not needed
According to a report by the International Energy Agency, coal in 2017 accounted for 38 percent of global energy production, followed by natural gas (23 percent). Both are unrenewable fossil fuels. So that being said, start to consciously turn off the lights when leaving the room so that energy consumption and pollution is limited.
Take a short shower
Did you know that the average American uses 69.3 gallons of water daily, amounting to 25,300 gallons of water used per year? Considering the fact that a shower uses five gallons of water a minute, taking shorter showers can significantly reduce your water use.
Don’t buy new electronic devices unless necessary
In the modern world that we live in where everyone is digitally connected, it’s hard to imagine life without it. As much as we love our electronics such as smartphones and computers, there is no denying the environmental impacts caused by the production and sourcing of precious materials needed.
Pick up trash
This is a fun family activity that can clean your neighborhood while also providing essential exercise and outdoor time to your day. To get started, get a trash bag, gloves, and tongs.
